Many of us have chased or crushed or perhaps currently are chasing or crushing on someone who, deep-down, we know wouldn't or doesn't return our feelings of affection or admiration. Why is it that we put ourselves, our emotions and our hearts through it? Why do we know that we're putting in more than the other person yet we continue to do so? How special can this person be to us if they seemingly don't appreciate us and all that we are willing to give?
For every individual, the reasoning will change. Perhaps you keep pursuing what doesn't want to be pursued because you have hope or perhaps it's because of fear. The two are on different ends of the spectrum so I must explain. On the one hand you may have hope that one day this person will come to their senses or open their eyes and realise that you're the one; you're something special. You hope that maybe, just maybe, the tables will change and they will eventually come to chase you or crush on you too.
On the other hand perhaps you keep trying to hold onto something out of fear of never finding anything better; fear of thinking that you won't find someone else. Whether it's hope or fear, you need to wait. Wait for the person who, as cliche as this sounds, knows what they have when they have you. Someone who genuinely deserves you and cares and loves for you will never want to see the relationship unbalanced due to you putting in more than them. Love requires the nurturing and effort of two people or else it will perish.
Why spend your time chasing someone who doesn't want to be chased? In the end, it only hurts and kills you more but if anything, you're only putting yourself through it all. If you can tell that you shouldn't be devoting yourself to someone who can't meet you halfway or simply just doesn't care for you at all then it's time to walk away and focus on yourself until you come across someone who won't take anything you have to offer for granted.
